Using Bulletin Boards for Teaching

Teachers of all grades should have interesting bulletin boards and visual displays around their classroom. Bulletin boards cover a number of different needs such as presenting students’ work, sharing important news or knowledge, and reinforcing key information and elements.

• The bulletin board needs to be an obvious place where all students can see it on a daily basis.
• Make your posters visually attractive and clear by using colors and large headings.
• If you have space in your class have a bulletin board that inspires. This will help you create a positive learning environment. Post famous inspirational quotes, pictures that rouse curiosity and interest, and any words or poems that encourage students to try their best.
• Depending on your subject you can have a featured author, artist or scientist board. This helps motivate students and can pique their curiosity if you post quirky facts and unexpected information. This will also help students open their minds to appreciate different kinds of people and their work.
• If you have a featured person board, include the person’s name, information, facts, a picture, and perhaps an example/excerpt of their work.
• Ask your students to make suggestions for upcoming features or better still nominate a person each week to make a new board.
