Teaching Tip: Parent Conferences

 
 

 
There are times when a conference with a student's parent(s) is called for. When scheduling a conference, clearly state your purpose for having the conference. Here are some guidelines for a successful conference.
  • Conduct the conference in a professional environment such as your classroom or an office.
  • Avoid interruptions to the extent possible.
  • Avoid educational jargon - use clear language that is easy to understand.
  • Bring information to support your purpose (e.g., anecdotal behavior records, written work, test papers).
  • Listen to what the parents have to say. Make it clear that you are working with them in a "partnership" to help the student.
  • End with a plan that both you and the parents can implement.
  • Follow up with a brief letter or email that summarizes the conference.
Above all, remain calm at all times. Always keep in mind that your student is their child.
