Using Poems

Poems are a useful tool when teaching content area subjects. Poems help your students to learn, think about, and remember content in subjects such as history, geography, science, and even math.

Here are three important ways in which the use of poems enhances content teaching. You can draw from collections of poems those which are most appropriate for a particular topic.

  1. Poems bring a human element and personal touch to topics. This helps students to form strong visual images that facilitate their remembering information.
  2. Poems provide powerful messages that breathe life into facts and concepts that your students might otherwise find to be uninteresting.
  3. Poems allow your students to explore the issues that relate to the topic. Students can form new insights about the content that are relevant to their lives and their world.
