Study Tip Archive - December 2007
"Always push yourself and explore your limits. See if you can study harder, understand things faster, write faster and calculate faster. Try not to use the calculator. Prepare notes so that you can look at them easily and fast before an exam. At exam, always think that you're here to show the teachers what you've got, not the other way around. Best of luck!"

"Just read everything over first. After you've read it, go back and get the key ideas out, jot them down, take notes. Answer questions that are at the end of each idea if it's in your textbook. Never be around TVs or radios. Stay AWAY from your ipod and cell phone. These will only distract you and cause you to not be able to concentrate. Just focus and take notes on only what you need, not everything, and go over it all at least twice."

"There are different abbreviations or symbols that you can use for taking notes: without -w/o, with - w/, number - #, government - gov. Use the first letter of the words to make your own abbreviation (Social Studies - SS, World History - WH)."

"If you have any kind of agenda or planner to write down what you need to study, write it down. I've learned that if I write down what I need to do, then that is the first step in doing it. If you don't write it down, you will just forget what to do. Take NOTES! Taking notes helps 70 percent on studying. You may think that it is a waste of time, but think about just jotting down some keywords for 10 minutes, compared to 30 minutes of studying and trying to memorize. The most important note taking is to jot down all of the dates."

"To study you need to be in a quiet room alone. That means no TV or radio or even talking on your phone to friends. Study for at least 25 minutes a day until that big, scary test comes. Good luck."

"I have found that if you turn off all computers, tv's, and even just go into a little room or other quiet space this will help. Next step, I read over everything twice. Once that is done, I go back to the parts I didn't quite get and keep studying them until I finally have them memorized. Once this is done it's time for testing. During the test be sure not to randomly look around. This will distract you and might cause your teacher to think you're cheating in some cases. Always stay focused and try to memorize everything that you read before. I know this is hard. I don't have a photographic memory myself. Bye and good luck."

"When reading a text, start with the table of contents. Frame the text's contents by first reviewing the outline of the work. Then read the preface, chapter introductions, and appendices. Understand the conclusions the author draws from his or her research and evaluation. Lastly, read the chapters you have been assigned. The text's details will make more sense and are likely to be better remembered if they are understood in context."

"My reading teacher taught me a great way to write paragraphs. Her study tip is to use the ROSES formula: R=Repeat the question that is given, O=give your Opinion, S= State 3 proven facts to help explain your answer, E=Explain your facts in 3 sentences, and S=Sum up your paragraph. If you use this tip it will seriously help you."

"First of all, start studying each subject for 30 minutes a day. This will make you judge which subject needs more time and which is easy and doesn't need much time, depending on your interests. Then start studying the hard subjects every day at least 30 minutes per subject. While studying avoid distractions, don't stop studying and draw things in your book, don't mess around with the desk you're sitting at, and don't think about what you finished studying. Always check on what you studied or memorized before sleeping. It's the best way to remember. Don't forget to set a schedule. Good luck to all."

"KSQ3RO: Know what you are to study. Survey what you need to study. Form questions to answer from studying. Read. Recite to yourself. Sit on your book so you don't peek. Review several times. Overlearn - Continue learning even after you know the material so you will be learning for the long term."
